Vacant Vintage

I recently had the pleasure to collaborate with some very talented people on a new editorial shoot. It took place at 5 Beekman, a beautifully decaying 9 story building, located just a block from City Hall. This vintage gem, also known as Temple Court, has been completely empty for a decade, and mostly closed off since 1940! Can you imagine this? So of course when Jacqueline Weppner of Merci New York contacted me about designing flowers for the shoot, I was delighted!

The inspiration for the shoot, created by the fabulous stylist Jacqueline Weppner, was to showcase some new color trends in the bridal fashion market. Take a look at her {styling inspiration}.  We worked with 2 color palettes; warm blush tones with gold and copper accents, and cool dusty blues with silver accents.

When designing bridal bouquets, I always like to create a “what to get” list then let my eyes work their designer magic when I actually get to the market (at 6 am with no coffee yet, always smiling of course). You never know what kind of delicious surprises you will find there. The selection of flowers in the market the morning of the shoot was quite fantastic. I found Antiqued Rose Tree Peonies {in October!} and open Fuchsia Clematis {perfect for a one day shoot}.

Passion Flower Vine (one of the items on my “what to get” list) coupled with the open Fuchsia Clematis created the perfect floral draping for the settee.

I also designed two luxurious clutch styled bridal bouquets. The “cool” bouquet consisted of White Phalaenopsis Orchids, White Roses, Blue Thistle, Grey Succulents, Dusty Miller and a silver satin ribbon wrapping.

The elements used in the “warm” bouquet were Antiqued Rose Tree Peonies, Sahara Roses, Pink Spray and Garden Roses, gold jewel accents, and a gold satin wrapping.

Who knew dust, decaying walls, and cast-iron dragons could be so fabulous!
